Five motivation hacks that do not rely on willpower
Willpower runs out fastest when you need it most. Use setup instead.
The short version: try one today
- Start with your shoes on.
- Put the fun thing after, never before.
- Text a friend your goal and a time.
Running on empty? Priori adds streaks, rewards and progress you can see. (We make it. It's free to download.)
Willpower is the flakiest tool you own. It's strongest when you're rested, fed and calm, which is when you need it least, and it vanishes at 4pm on a deadline day. The five ADHD motivation hacks below skip willpower completely. They work through setup: arranging things in advance so that starting takes less of a push.
None of them is clever. Each one removes a decision or adds a little pull, and you can try any of them today.
Why willpower quits first
Pushing yourself to start a task you don't want to do draws on executive function, and with ADHD that supply is smaller and less predictable. Every "come on, just do it" spends some. By the afternoon there's often nothing left, and you're on the sofa knowing exactly what you should be doing.
Many women with ADHD were told for years to try harder, sometimes long before anyone mentioned a diagnosis. Trying harder was never the missing piece. Setup works because it happens earlier, when you have more to give, and it lowers the price of starting later. If starting is your main sticking point, getting started when your whole body says no covers it in depth.
Two ADHD motivation hacks for getting your body moving
Hack one: start with your shoes on. Shoes tell your body the day has begun and you're not going back to bed. It sounds too small to matter. Try cleaning the kitchen in socks and then in trainers, and see which version of you gets further. On work-from-home days, shoes and real clothes can be what separates working from drifting.
Hack two: lay it out the night before. Evening you often has more to spare than morning you. Put the gym kit on the chair, leave the laptop open on the right document, stand the laundry basket in front of your bedroom door so you have to pick it up. For a 9am lecture, pack the bag and put your keys on top. Everything you set up is one less decision at the worst possible time.
Three more: fun goes last, friends come in
Hack three is about order. If you watch one episode first as a warm-up, you already know how that ends. The fun thing gives your brain all the reward it was looking for, and the task has nothing left to offer.
Flip it. Task first, then the episode, the scroll, the snack, the call with your friend. Keep the task part small enough that the fun is clearly within reach: twenty minutes of reading, then lunch. If you keep caving and taking the fun early, the task chunk is too big. Halve it.
Hack four: text a friend your goal and a time. Something like "sending my flat deposit paperwork by 2pm, ask me if I did." A goal in your own head is easy to renegotiate. A goal someone else is waiting on has a little urgency built in. Choose a friend who'll check in kindly, and offer to do the same for her.
Hack five: do it next to someone. Many people with ADHD find it much easier to stay on a task when another person is working nearby, even in silence. It's called body doubling, and it works in a library, on a video call or at the kitchen table with a flatmate. Priori has body doubling sessions if nobody you know is free. The basics are in body doubling: the simplest ADHD hack there is.
When a hack stops working
It will. ADHD brains get used to things, and the trick that carried you through October can feel flat by December. You haven't failed at it. Treat the five as a menu and pick whichever feels freshest this week.
- Shoes on
- Set it up the night before
- Fun after, never before
- Text a goal and a time
- Work beside someone
And if nothing on the menu works for days on end, look at sleep, food and stress before you blame yourself.
Quick questions
How can I get motivated with ADHD without relying on willpower?
Set things up in advance so starting takes less effort: lay out what you need the night before, put your shoes on, and save the fun activity for afterwards. Adding another person, by texting them your goal or working alongside them, supplies outside pull. These reduce how much pushing you have to do in the moment.
Why do ADHD motivation tricks stop working after a while?
ADHD brains respond strongly to novelty, so a trick that felt fresh can lose its effect once it becomes routine. That's expected and doesn't mean you did it wrong. Keep several options and rotate between them.
