Virtual body doubling works even with cameras off
Knowing someone is there can be enough.
The short version: try one today
- Open a call and both mute.
- Share goals in the chat.
- Agree an end time before you start.
Nobody around to work with? Priori has body doubling sessions built in. (We make it. It's free to download.)
Two laptops, two different cities, two cameras off. One of you is fighting a lab report and the other is finally answering the email about her tax code. Nobody speaks for forty minutes. Somehow both things get done. That is virtual body doubling, and it sounds too simple to work until you try it.
The short version: knowing someone is there can be enough. You do not need to be watched. You need to be accompanied.
Why it works with the camera off
Body doubling means doing a task while another person is present. Research on it is still early, and most of what we know comes from people with ADHD describing what helps them. The usual explanation is that another person adds a gentle social cue. Your brain registers that this is work time, because someone else is clearly in work time too.
That cue does not seem to need video. A small muted square with a name on it still says someone is here and assumes you are working. For lots of women that is a relief. Many women with ADHD report years of masking, and being on camera can become a second task: looking focused, managing your face, tidying the visible corner of your room. Cameras off removes the performance and keeps the company.
A two-minute setup for virtual body doubling
Use whatever call tool you both already have. The less new software involved, the fewer chances to get lost in the settings menu.
- Open the call and say a quick hello, so it feels like a person and not a void. Then both mute.
- Type your goal in the chat. Small and specific wins: 'Reply to landlord about the boiler' beats 'do admin'.
- Agree an end time before you start. Forty-five minutes is a decent first try.
- At the end, unmute and say what happened. One sentence each.
Writing the goal in the chat matters more than it looks. Working memory with ADHD can be leaky, so twenty minutes in you may honestly forget what you sat down to do. The chat is right there, reminding you, and nobody has to nag.
Why the end time comes first
An open-ended call feels like a trap. Your brain hears 'work until it is done' and quietly refuses, because done could be three hours away. A fixed end makes the session feel survivable. You can do nearly anything until 3:45.
It also protects the friendship. Without an end, somebody has to be the one who leaves, and that person feels guilty. With an end, you both just finish. If you are on a roll at 3:45, agree a second round, but make it a fresh decision with a fresh end time.
When it does not work
Some days you will mute, stare at the screen and scroll your phone under the desk. It happens. Type a smaller goal into the chat, something that takes five minutes, and tell your partner you are stuck. Saying it tends to loosen it.
If cameras off makes you drift every time, try camera on but pointed at your hands or your desk. You get the feeling of being seen without the face management. And if arranging a call is the hurdle, set up a standing link you can both drop into whenever, which is the idea behind virtual coworking.
Focus also shifts from week to week. Many women notice a pattern across their menstrual cycle, though research there is still early. A session that flew last Tuesday might feel like wading through mud today. Shorten it and count it anyway.
Quick questions
Does virtual body doubling work with cameras off?
Many people with ADHD find it does, because the helpful part is knowing another person is present and working. If you notice you drift more with the camera off, try pointing it at your desk or hands so you feel seen without having to manage how you look.
How long should a virtual body doubling session be?
Somewhere between 25 and 60 minutes suits most people, and 45 minutes is a reasonable first try. Agree the end time before you start so the session feels finite, then decide afterwards whether you want another round.
